Five Drips from Vesuvius
is the
first of a seminal series of works
Dodiya embarked on in 1998
incorporating text in a conceptual
form. It is a tribute to the young
Bombay artist Girish Dahiwale who
committed suicide that same year.
Two columns of medical conditions
combined with an image of
Dahiwale with his ear against a
sculptural form comprised of
circles form a memento mori, with
the bunches of grapes and drips
emblematicof afleetingburst of life.
The dispassionate listing of words
– ominous in their connotation –
becomes the artistic framework.
“Dreams, health, culture, politics,
humour, life itself in fact, nurtures
the creative act and the formal
strategies underpinning it.” (E
Juncosa, “Painted Words,” Ranjit
Hoskote ed.,
