B Prabha, a woman artist who came from a
small village near Nagpur, was concerned with
the plight of rural and marginalised women,
who formed the thematic basis of her oeuvre.
She developed her own distinct style, working
mainly in oils. The elongated, almost regal form,
which was typical of her rendering of female
figures, is instantly recognisable. A demure, yet
elegant poise defines Prabha’s women, who are
usually solitary or exude a sense of solitude as
they go about their daily lives. Prabha’s work
speaks volumes about the honesty of village life,
painted in carefully chosen colours.
