K G Subramanyan’s focus on small canvases
from the 1980s onwards led him to create
diptychs and polyptychs. Over the decades, he
moved from an anti-narrative approach that
enhanced a purely visual experience, towards
grids placed together that hinted at narrative
potential.
R Siva Kumar writes that his works “...suggest that
for him there are only tools, ideas and emotions,
no permanent rules or fixed conventions, and
everything is in the service of expression and
communication under the broad ambit of a
personal language. And the two, expression and
communication, are not antithetical for him.”

Subramanyan,”
